ChildhoodVinod was born into a middle-class nuclear family in Mumbai, India and studied at a local school run by Jesuits. An undiagnosed autistic, he struggled to keep pace with life through his school years just scraping by. He was bullied often, did not participate in extracurricular activities or sports, kept mostly to himself avoiding social interactions.
Young Vinod was an emotional eater who couldn't stop binge eating, by the age of 16 he was 5 feet four inches and weighed 98 kilograms (216 pounds); played no sports, had few friends, did poorly in studies and had regular melt downs. Emotionally and physically abused in his home for being fat and stupid, he escaped from life by reading, he read any and everything he could get his hands on, counted numbers in his head and stayed close to the friends he had. With almost no resources to identify Autism in the 70s and 80s in India, unable to understand their child's condition his parents assumed the worst and expected no future for him.
Pivot Vinod's pivot happened at age 17 when he lost weight and discovered what would become his life long passion: Running. He felt free and alive when he ran. By the age of 19, Vinod began his spiritual quest, was an accomplished runner, student editor of his college magazine and had begun to participate in debates. He was less awkward and gained confidence but his autism persisted undiagnosed leaving him confused, ashamed and inadequate.
